Greensboro Edges Hood Women in Overtime, 2-1

ARLINGTON, Va.--First-year Jessie Herbert of the Hood College women's soccer team (0-1) scored her first collegiate goal in a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to the Greensboro College Pride (1-0) Friday evening at the Marymount University Tournament.

After Greensboro drew first blood in the 18th minute when Melanie Raton headed in a corner kick from Sarah Hopkins, Herbert netted the equalizer in the 70th minute on a breakaway after she intercepted a pass from the Pride.

First-year goalkeeper Leah Norris kept the Blazers in the game by making three saves in the final 18 minutes of regulation. The Blazers had a chance at the go-ahead score in the 86th minute but Aimee Smith's header attempt sailed high over the crossbar.

Norris collected her 10th save off an attempt by GC's Meredith Kelly 2:22 into the extra session but she was unable to corral Allison Gibson's shot less than a minute later on a breakaway opportunity which proved to be the golden goal for the Pride.

Greensboro outshot the Blazers, 24-8, and attempted six corners to Hood's two. Smith finished with three shots on the night while Sam Norris, Amy Madert, Lia Miller, Katie Bailey and Herbert all finished with one apiece.

Hood will next take on Trinity University (D.C.) in the second round of the Marymount Tournament Saturday at 3 p.m.
