FREDERICK, Md.--Senior shortstop Sara Wastler of the softball team has been chosen as the Hood College Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 6.
Wastler added another school record to her impressive collegiate resume and helped the Blazers solidify their fourth-place ranking in the Capital Athletic Conference standings.
The native of Rocky Ridge, Md., compiled a .462 batting average and collected 12 basehits, including three homeruns, while driving in eight runs in a 5-3 week for Hood. Four of those wins came against CAC opponents which evened Hood's record at 4-4 in the league.
Her biggest hit of the week came Sunday in the opener against Stevenson University. She capped a 2-for-3, five-RBI day with her second homerun of the game, a three-run walk-off shot in the bottom of the fifth, to clinch a 10-0 five-inning victory over the Mustangs. With that blast, Wastler became Hood's career RBI leader (77) and became the first player in program history to go deep twice in one game.
In Saturday's twinbill versus visiting Gallaudet University, she combined to go 5-for-6 with a homerun and four runs scored.
Wastler is currently second on the team in with a .343 batting average and leads the team with 24 basehits. She has driven in 17 runs and scored a team-best 17 runs as well.
Hood has a pair of key doubleheaders against conference opponents this week. The Blazers travel to second-place York College (Pa.) Thursday and seventh-place Wesley College Saturday.
