FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Shay Braithwaite (Montgomery Village, Md. / Watkins Mill) had four assists, just one off the Hood record, in a non-conference loss to Southwestern (Texas), 11-8.
Braithwaite also added one goal on the day. Derian Le (Frederick, Md. / Gov. Thomas Johnson) had two goals and one assist, and Anne Lessard (Natick, Mass. / Natick) also notched two goals. Aleyna Fitz (Brunswick, Md. / Brunswick) added one goal, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Courtney Hayes (Columbia, Md. / Chapelgate Christian Acad.) had a game-high three caused turnovers. Jade Locklear (Baltimore, Md. / Chesapeake) had seven draw controls and added one goal and one assist. Lauren Couch (Crownsville, Md. / Old Mill) had eight saves in goal.
The Pirates notched two goals in the opening three minutes to take an early lead, 2-0. Braithwaite found the back of the net at 25:54 to put the Blazers on the board, 2-1.
Courtney Ragland had back-to-back goals for the Pirates with 23:44 to go, for a 4-1 advantage. Locklear scored off a pass from Braithwaite two minutes later to cut Southwestern's lead in half, 4-2.
Three goals over a 15 minute stretch pulled the Pirates ahead 7-2 with 5:45 remaining. Fitz scored off an assist from Christina Murphy (Denville, N.J. / Morris Knolls) with one minute remaining, and Le scored 15 seconds later with the help of Locklear to cut it to 7-4 at halftime.
Southwestern started the scoring three minutes into the second half (8-4). Braithwaite passed to Le a minute later to bring Hood back within three. The Pirates had a free position goal with 22:27 on the clock, and another assist from Braithwaite allowed Lessard to score a minute later, 9-6.
Le made a pass to Brigid Ayer (Frederick, Md. / Frederick) who found the back of the net with 16:41 remaining, pulling Hood within two, 9-7. Another 8-meter goal from Southwestern pulled them ahead, 10-7. Hood's Lessard scored with the help of Braithwaite with five minutes to go for the Blazers final goal (10-8). The Pirates added a final goal with 3:15 on the clock to seal the victory, 11-8.
Ragland and Kate Davis led Southwestern with three goals apiece. Allison Cook had four ground balls and two caused turnovers.Emma Albin had three draw controls and Jordan Little had four ground balls and stopped seven shots in goal.
The Blazers return to conference play on April 15 as they take on Lycoming at home.
